Action on the river

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

After that miserable piece of poker knowledge that Mr. Blue dropped here last time, I will show you something today that you can really use to improve your own game. It’s all about certain moves you can make on the river.

I stumbled upon this subject because I was involved in a specific situation this week during a tournament on FTP:

I like my hand a little more because I’m on the button here. I could have raised, but try to see a flop cheaply here. Now the Ace flops with a pair of threes and the small blind leads out: always risky. However, I’m not folding of course and try to see what he’ll do on the turn. He bets the same amount on the turn which could be a sign of having a three: there’s a small chance that I’m going to outdraw that hand on this board. When he bets small on the river again I have enough information and I make a raise for two reasons.

First of all I was playing fairly loose-aggressive on this table and he could call me here with a medium pocket pair because of my image. And second, he might have a smaller Ace and pay my value raise. I think he had like 55 or something and he folds. Btw, if you would like to read more of my plays and the terrible beats I have to face now and then in specific, you can visit my own very interesting poker blog!

The Phil-theory (2)

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

Yes you may remember that Mr. White wrote a post during the challenge about the so-called ‘Phil-theory’. I think I understand what he was saying and I made use of it myself, Mr. Blue, when playing a tournament on Pokerstars yesterday.

The profit I made during the challenge resulted in a nice bankroll for me so I’m playing some good tournaments atm and made a cash out of $224 yesterday. When I got eliminated I remembered a situation very early in the tournament when I had KK in the hole but an Ace came on the flop and I was really convinced my opponent flopped toppair. So that’s what is meant by ‘there are better spots’.

Because later on, when I had acquired a loose-aggressive image (YES, Mr. Brown), I was able to make a comeback with the next premium hand:

So this guy just thinks I’m fooling around and pays me off maximally. From that moment on I was on fire! Thanks for the pokerlesson Phil and Mr. White ;)

Luckboxing brings Mr. Brown back in the game

Saturday, January 3rd, 2009

Well that’s very nice for him, but the most important news first: Mr. White is back on top of the rankings with a bankroll of $144! I had a little downswing last time, but I recovered pretty well from it. I stayed very focused and only played single table sng’s ($5) for a while, in which I made some nice cash.

I was even more cheered up when I heard that our lovely Ms. Pink had a little downswing by herself, leading to a bankroll of only $105. She’s not even on second place anymore, since Mr. Brown seems to have had a sick luck-run on the $6 (turbo) hu-tables, leading to $118 at the moment. When I saw some hands, I realised how unfair poker sometimes can be, look at this one for example:

So these are the landmines you have to avoid when playing a solid game. Subsequently I saw how some people apparently just donate their chips to their opponents on those hu-tables:

According to Mr. Brown, his ‘loose aggressive image made the other player pay off this hand’. Sure, J5 is the perfect hand to punish some loose luckbox with… (btw, Mr Brown, in the last post, losing with T7 against KK is a bad beat?! Hey, not calling with this junk will save you from this cruelty man.) Meanwhile Mr. Blue is still comfortably living in last place, altough it looks like he recovers a little bit from his missed start: $72. Btw, happy New Year everybody ;) .
